Research interests focus on immune tolerance mediated through myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs), dendritic cells (DCs), and regulatory T cells (Tregs).

We investigate the molecular signaling requirements of murine monocytes to develop into MDSC and test the potential of in vitro generated MDSCs for therapy of autoimmune models. In addition we work on immune evasion strategies of mycobacteria targeting MDSCs.

We study DCs and Tregs under steady state conditions in mice to learn how tolerance to self-antigens is maintained. The RelB expression in steady state migratory DCs, which transport self antigens from the skin to lymph nodes are in the focus of our current research. Such tolerogenic migratory DCs can be targeted by transcutaneous allergen appication as a variation of hyposensitization in horses.

Further projects include the molecular requirements of immature DCs to convert anergic into regulatory T cells and the immune evasion of Vibrio cholerae by inducing tolerogenic mediators in DCs.
